Amid rising poverty and growing inequality, 'Stëmm vun der Strooss' brought holiday cheer to hundreds of vulnerable individuals at its traditional Christmas event on Thursday.

On Thursday, the homeless support organisation Stëmm vun der Strooss ("Voice of the Street") held its traditional Christmas celebration, offering people in precarious situations or living on the streets a brief respite from their daily struggles.

Held at the cultural centre in Bonnevoie, the event provided warm meals, hygiene products, and clothing to those in need, many of whom face financial hardship, health issues, or addiction. Beyond material support, the celebration created a sense of community, allowing participants to momentarily set aside their worries.

More than 500 meals were served during the afternoon. Despite the addition of a tent with extra tables and chairs, the high turnout meant some guests had to wait to be admitted.

The growing demand reflects the rising number of people living in precarious circumstances, according to Alexandra Oxacelay, director of Stëmm vun der Strooss.

Oxacelay attributed the increase to global conflicts, geopolitical instability, and the mounting pressures of inflation and high living costs. She expressed concern about the disappearing middle class and the widening gap between rich and poor.

The director also highlighted the steady rise in the number of "working poor" seeking the organisation's services–individuals who, despite having jobs, struggle to make ends meet. Families needing assistance are also on the rise, a trend Oxacelay said was rarely seen five years ago.

"Those living on the street are just the tip of the iceberg," Oxacelay noted, adding, "Poverty also hides behind walls."

The annual Christmas celebration aims to show solidarity with those facing hardships, ensuring they feel neither alone nor forgotten during the holiday season.
