The 24-hour escape of a murder suspect from a psychiatric facility last week has sparked a response from two MPs, who have submitted a parliamentary question to Ministers Elisabeth Margue and Martine Deprez.
Following the RTL report on the escape last week of a murder suspect who had been placed in a secure psychiatric unit at the Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Centre (CHNP) in Ettelbruck, the first political figures haven taken up the issue.
MPs Charel Weiler and Jean-Paul Schaaf of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) have submitted a parliamentary question to Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue and Minister of Health Martine Deprez. In it, the MPs enquire how the 36-year-old man was able to escape during an accompanied outing and what measures will be taken to avoid similar incidents in the future.
Additionally, Weiler and Schaaf seek to know whether the government has any plans to establish a new unit within Schrassig prison where culprits affected by psychiatric conditions could be securely placed.
The individual at the centre of the recent news report was declared unfit to stand trial due to a mental disorder by the Appeals Court's pre-trial chamber in 2016, despite sufficient evidence linking him to the fatal stabbing of a man in Ettelbruck the year before.
Last week, the man was on the run for 24 hours before he was eventually found and arrested in Germany.
