A woman passed away in hospital on Wednesday after a house fire in Esch-sur-Alzette left her seriously injured in late November.

The Luxembourg police confirmed on Thursday that the victim of the house fire that broke out in Esch-sur-Alzette in late November has succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

In the early hours of 27 November, emergency services received reports of a fire that had broken out in the centre of Esch, leading to the deployment of a significant number of firefighters and police officers.

At the time, the police stated that a home had caught fire on Rue Victor Hugo. The fire brigade later specified that it was a house.

The large-scale intervention involved several units of the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS), including two ambulances, the Emergency Medical Assistance Team (SAMU), the local fire brigade, as well as additional firefighters from Kayl, Pétange, and Sanem-Differdange.

The fire brigade later reported that a woman had been injured and admitted to hospital. Esch Mayor Christian Weis and the police subsequently confirmed that she was a resident of the house in question. At the time, the victim's condition was described as "concerning".

"When I went out onto my terrace, I saw from the window that everything was engulfed in flames, and that the woman was standing on the terrace," a neighbour told RTL, adding "of course, I immediately called the fire brigade and an ambulance."

On Thursday, the police confirmed that the victim passed away in hospital on Wednesday. In order to determine the exact cause of death, the public prosecutor's office has requested an autopsy.

Mayor Weis announced that an expert report is currently being compiled to determine the cause of the accident.
