As COP29 approaches, Votum Klima has organised a photography exhibition to raise awareness to the issues, and Youth 4 Climate Action emphasises the importance of young voices.
With a photography exhibition, the Votum Klima organisation wants to raise awareness to the issues being deliberated at the climate conference in Azerbaijan.
At COP 29, concrete decisions concerning finances are meant to be taken, keeping in mind the questions of which countries should contribute, and by how much. One of the goals is to help developing countries with financing, as well as general changes to climate protection.
For Raymond Klein, representative of the association "Action Solidarité Tiers Monde" and Votum Klima, Luxembourg also plays an important part: “That means for Luxembourg, that the country should contribute their correct part, which can be calculated by, on the one hand, looking at what Luxembourg’s emissions have amounted to in the past years. So, a kind of historical responsibility. On the other hand, our prosperity, which enables us to come up with a lot of money. The result of these calculations is €600 million a year.”
Even teenagers can get involved with COP29: organisation "Youth 4 Climate Action” is sending five young people to Baku to represent Luxembourg. Leon Kris reinforces the importance of giving a voice to young people: “I think it is extremely important, because after all we are the ones who have to live with the consequences of climate change. The decisions taken today will affect us in possibly 20, 30, 40, 50 years and that is why I believe it is crucial for young people to take part in the decision-making process.”
Among other requests, “Youth 4 Climate Action” demands a clearer roadmap on how to get away from fossil fuels. 197 countries – EU included – are represented in Baku. COP29 begins on Monday, 11 November.
