Northern Lights were visible over Luxembourg during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday.

What exactly causes those colourful lights in the sky?

According to Meteolux, the phenomenon, known as the Aurora Borealis, is triggered by so-called solar storms. These storms are caused by explosions or eruptions on the surface of the sun, which release a large concentration of high-energy particles directed towards Earth.

When these particles collide with Earth's magnetic field, the Aurora Borealis appears. The stronger the solar storm, the more intense the concentration of particles, and the further south the lights can be seen.

As an especially strong solar storm is currently active, the Northern Lights were visible from Luxembourg and may also be visible again on Wednesday night, depending on conditions.
