Starting from 1 November, border checks will be reinstated between France and Luxembourg for a minimum duration of six months.

This announcement has sparked criticism and raised concerns among cross-border workers in Luxembourg. In an RTL interview during his visit to Slovenia, Interior Minister Léon Gloden reassured that the checks would be similar to those during the Olympic Games last summer, noting that there were no significant traffic jams at that time. Gloden is scheduled to speak with the French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau next week.

According to Schengen rules, a country may implement border checks if there are concerns about public safety. Retailleau has informed the EU Commission that such concerns currently exist.

Gloden emphasised that Schengen must remain operational and questioned the effectiveness of border checks in Germany, suggesting that such checks could just as easily be conducted within national territory.
