On Friday, the Council of Ministers approved a new bill aimed at doubling Sunday working hours while ensuring that workers are fairly compensated for their time.
Following the green light obtained this Friday by the Council of Government, Minister of Labour Georges Mischo announced a bill aimed at amending the article in the Labour Code concerning Sunday working hours.
New measures will be introduced to extend Sunday working hours for shops from four to eight hours, while introducing a 70% increase in the hourly wage for any additional hours worked on Sundays, compared to regular weekday wages.
The extension of Sunday working hours to eight hours "reflects current developments in society and in a changing world of work," according to the Ministry of Labour. These adjustments aim to strike a balance between allowing shops to operate longer on Sundays while ensuring that the work-life balance of salespeople and craftsmen is respected, and that workers are fairly compensated for their time.
Labour Minister Georges Mischo has stated that despite doubling the potential working hours on Sundays, the measures still uphold the principles of employment law and respect for labour.
