The former Echternach alderman replaces Max Hengel as MP in the Chamber of Deputies, following the latter's death in August.

Marques, a psychologist who previously served on Echternach council, is set to join the Chamber of Deputies for the CSV, replacing Max Hengel after the Wormeldange mayor's passing this summer.

The 31-year-old took his oath on Thursday afternoon, later telling RTL he had conflicted feelings over his appointment due to its tragic origins.

On Max Hengel, he said: "Above all, it's the fact a friend is now longer there. Someone who had big plans for politics. It's not easy to say to yourself, I'm replacing Max. Of course I'll do my best, because that's part of life, but these thoughts will always linger."

Marques is just the third MP in Luxembourgish history with Portuguese origins, after Felix and Liz Braz. He hopes to work in the fields of mental health and family within the Chamber of Deputies.

During his time as an MP, Max Hengel also served as president of the Chamber committee for health - a committee on which Marques will also sit.
