A solemn moment transpired in parliament this Wednesday as MPs and government staff gathered to bid a final farewell to the late Christian Social People's Party MP Max Hengel.
Christian Social People's Party (CSV) politician Max Hengel passed away at the age of 47 in mid-August after a long battle with cancer. In a heartfelt ceremony, family and friends of the former MP gathered with government officials in the Chamber of Deputies to honour his memory.
Speeches were delivered by Claude Wiseler, President of the Chamber of Deputies, CSV parliamentary party president Marc Spautz, and Prime Minister Luc Frieden, all in tribute to Hengel.
Hengel was remembered as a true representative of the people, always prioritising the well-being of his municipality, Wormeldange and the entire country. His party colleagues fondly recalled his cheerful, friendly, and helpful demeanour, qualities that defined him even as he bravely fought against colon cancer while continuing his work for the public good.
The tribute concluded with a minute of silence in memory of Hengel, with a photograph placed at his former seat in parliament.
Max Hengel's political career began in 1998, and from November 2017 to November 2020, he served as mayor of Wormeldange. He remained active in local politics as an alderman and was once again elected mayor of Wormeldange in July 2023.
In 2022, Hengel took his oath as an MP after officially entering the Chamber of Deputies. He was reelected in the most recent parliamentary elections and notably took on the role of President of the Health Commission.
Outside of politics, Hengel was deeply passionate about sports. He served as the President of the Musel Pikes basketball team for seven years. He leaves behind his wife and two sons.
