As of the end of 2024, the LuxTrust mobile app will become the primary authentication method in Luxembourg, phasing out traditional tokens used for online payments and identity verification.
More practical, easier to use, and above all, more secure: the LuxTrust mobile app will soon become the main method for user authentication in Luxembourg. The app will replace the existing token system, a code generator that will be deactivated by the end of the year.
The LuxTrust authentication system is currently used for online payments and identification on guichet.lu. Several Luxembourg associations are collaborating with LuxTrust representatives to inform the public about this transition. Our colleagues from RTL Télé attended one of these informative meetings.
Alain Lang of LuxTrust emphasised that the shift from tokens to mobile applications is necessary due to evolving regulations since the introduction of tokens in 2008. "We are compelled to adopt new technologies," Lang stated. He highlighted a key advantage of the app: users can see what they are authorising, including payment details – information that is not available with tokens. "We've added an extra dimension of security to our system," he concluded.
At the end of the presentation, attendees were invited to receive assistance in switching to the new system.
Here is a brief overview of the steps involved in the transition:
- Download the LuxTrust app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Don't throw your token away just yet, as it will be needed to activate the app.
- Register on the app using your personal codes and follow the prompts.
- A confirmation text will be sent at the end of the activation process.
Although creating an account on the app involves several steps, they are generally quick and straightforward. If users encounter difficulties, LuxTrust customer service and online help are available to assist.
For individuals without smartphones or those uncomfortable using them, an alternative option is available: LuxTrust Scan, a device that scans QR codes on screens to generate one-time passwords (OTPs). According to LuxTrust, this solution is more secure than the traditional token.
An additional information meeting is scheduled for 8 October in Luxembourg City. Attendees can meet at CLAE, rue de Gasperich, at 6pm.
