The seven-year-old twins missing since Saturday were found in Trier on Monday evening, Luxembourg's public prosecutor's office has confirmed.

The two girls went missing from a children's home in the southwest of Luxembourg after relatives picked them up for a day trip at noon on Saturday, and never returned them.

No amber alert

Our colleagues from RTL on Monday contacted the prosecutor's youth protection department to enquire why no amber alert was triggered after the twins disappeared. This system is usually used in child disappearances where time is of the essence.

A spokesperson explained the investigation was "running around the clock" and that they are regularly being updated. However, to not risk interfering with the investigation, no further details were made public, she noted. An amber alert was not triggered since the authorities do not believe the girls' lives to be in danger. "Given the circumstances, the prosecution does not believe that there is an acute danger for the children", the spokesperson further said.

With the support of the German authorities, the repatriation to the original designated home was carried out on Monday evening.

Due to the ongoing investigation, the public prosecutor's office will not communicate any further details.
