The Hammerel bridge in Bettembourg has been closed to traffic since 15 March, previously accommodating 10,000 vehicles daily.

Work to demolish the Hammerel bridge began on 15 March in the centre of Bettembourg. As a result, Bettembourg station has been closed since 13 July and will remain so until 11 August. During this period, no trains will operate between Thionville and Luxembourg City or between Volmerange-les-Mines, Bettembourg, and Luxembourg City.

Additionally, rail traffic between Bettembourg and Luxembourg City will not resume until mid-September due to a separate project on the line. In other words, this summer promises to be challenging for cross-border train users.

Heavy construction machinery started levelling the ground on Thursday. By Friday evening, the bridge that spanned Bettembourg station for 50 years will be completely gone.

A new bridge, an impressive bowstring design similar to the one recently installed over the A3, will be placed in its final position by the middle of next week.
