The challenges began on Saturday, with huge queues forming on Monday morning at Thionville station. For two months, no trains will run between Bettembourg and Luxembourg due to major construction work.
From Saturday, 13 July until Sunday, 11 August, Bettembourg station will be closed for the rehabilitation of the Emile Hammerel bridge.
During this period, no trains will operate between Thionville and Luxembourg, as well as between Volmerange-les-Mines, Bettembourg, and Luxembourg.
The situation will worsen with a second shutdown starting Monday, 12 August, lasting an additional month.
This means no trains will run between Bettembourg and Luxembourg until mid-September.
Commuters are already feeling the strain, with some posting their experiences to social media. On Monday, a long queue formed early at Thionville station as passengers waited for the replacement buses provided by CFL. The bus ride is expected to add 30 to 45 minutes to travel times - not including the wait to board, which itself can take 25 minutes.
In addition to CFL's replacement buses at Hettange-Grande station, the community of communes of Cattenom and surrounding areas has launched a shuttle service to Bettembourg during the train traffic interruption.
However, bicycles and scooters are not permitted on the coaches to facilitate boarding, according to a tweet from TER Nancy-Metz-Luxembourg.
CFL emphasised the "strategic importance of these works for future mobility", acknowledging the "inconvenience caused to daily commuters". They have provided detailed information on the bus substitution service available throughout the summer.
