Starting Friday, 15 March, and until the end of 2024, motorists in Bettembourg will encounter significant changes as the Hammerel bridge, the town's main bridge, closes to traffic.

Erected in 1975, the aging structure spanning the railway tracks has fallen into disrepair due to the heavy traffic flow, with over 10,000 vehicles traversing it daily.

The closure of the Hammerel bridge necessitates diversions for commuters, including lorry operators, car drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. These diversions aim to facilitate smooth traffic flow through and around Bettembourg during the construction period.

March - Summer 2024

Preparatory work for the demolition of the Bettembourg bridge will start in the coming weeks. This includes dismantling the large structures of the Hammerel bridge.

Summer 2024

From 13 July to 12 August, Bettembourg station will be closed, affecting train services on both the Esch-Bettembourg-Luxembourg City and Metz-Thionville-Luxembourg City lines. Substitute shuttle buses will be provided to mitigate inconvenience for commuters. During this period, the old bridge will be completely demolished, while the new bridge will be erected and installed between summer and the end of 2024. The bridge over the railway tracks is expected to reopen to traffic by the year's end.

The entire project is scheduled for completion in May 2025, with an estimated cost of €18 million.

Roadblocks and diversions put in place by the Bridges and Roads Authority

Seeing as the OA265 (Hammerel Bridge) will be inaccessible in both directions, the Bridges and Roads Authority has issued guidance for motorists to minimise disruption.

  • Avoid Bettembourg: Road users are advised to steer clear of Bettembourg and use alternative routes, primarily the A3 and A13 motorways, whenever possible.

  • Main diversion (heavy vehicles): Particularly aimed at vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes, the primary diversion route will guide traffic via the CR161 at the Winandy car dealership (located between Bettembourg and Hellange), the service road leading to the multimodal centre, the green bridge alongside the A13, before rejoining the N31 between Dudelange and Bettembourg. From there, vehicles will enter Bettembourg via the "Cellula" bridge.

  • Secondary diversion (light vehicles): Light vehicles will be directed through Rue de Peppange (CR132), passing under the A3 motorway, then turning onto Rue des Ponts in Peppange (CR159). The route continues to Livange, where motorists can rejoin the N31 towards Bettembourg.

  • Pedestrian and cyclist diversion: Pedestrians and cyclists are advised to use existing infrastructure, including the underpass (ramp and staircase), as well as the pedestrian footbridge within Bettembourg station.
