The future remains uncertain for a new sports arena and sports museum in Esch-sur-Alzette, as the designated location for the facilities is no longer fit for purpose.
It was recently announced that construction of the planned sports facilities in the Lankelz district of Esch-sur-Alzette would not be permitted to continue as the zone was deemed non-buildable.
On Friday, LSAP councillor Liz Braz demanded explanations from the municipal council. She was joined by opposition members from the Left and the ADR in accusing the ruling coalition of having failed to push ahead with the project.
Esch alderman André Zwally, responsible for sports, rebuffed the criticism, saying the council had only had confirmation 2-3 months ago that the new government would keep the non-buildable zone. In the meantime, the council had met with the contractor for the project as well as with relevant municipal services to discuss other options.
"It depends on whether the sports arena would fit in the Lankelz area, or if the sports museum could be moved to a different site altogether," Zwally said. "Both the contractor and our services say the project cannot continue as the situation currently stands, which proves it was not just the addition of the museum as a deciding factor. We are considering it to see where it could work best."
Braz expressed dissatisfaction with the explanations and said she was no wiser about the situation than before.
"I realise now that a lot of this information has not been communicated transparently in recent years," she said. "We've had a total lack of transparency on this project, not necessarily by those represented here today, but I think we've been lied to by the people in charge. It shows how much sloppiness there has been with regard to this project in the last six years."
