In recent days, more reports have come in by users of a Deep Fake video of the Grand Duke circulating on social media platforms.

In the video, the voice of the Grand Duke, speaking in German, can be heard inciting people to invest money. The "Maison du Grand-Duc," the Grand Duke's administrative body, comments that the video is "obviously" a Deep Fake.

In a written response, the "Maison du Grand-Duc" also states that: "Artificial intelligence is a fantastic innovation, when used responsibly." It has contacted the platforms to delete the video.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the videos could still be seen on Facebook.

How to spot a Deep Fake?

In this specific example, it is immediately obvious that "Liechtenstein" is displayed under the video instead of "Luxembourg." Additionally, upon closer inspection, it is evident that the lip-sync in the video doesn't match the spoken words - in other words, the lips don't move in sync with the audio.

Users should then question the credibility of the video and ask themselves whether the head of state of any country would endorse dubious financial transactions. A notion that is evidently implausible.

How are Deep Fakes created?

Through a quick online search, the original video used to create the counterfeit one is quickly found. This original footage dates back to March 2020, featuring the Grand Duke addressing the nation, urging solidarity and responsibility amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The voice was recreated using AI (artificial intelligence) and "Text-to-Speech" software. These have the capacity to learn from audio and text samples, enabling them to generate new sentences that mimic the original speaker's voice.
