Monique Goldschmit, President of ProVelo, expressed concerns about the effectiveness of Luxembourg City's new mobility plan in a recent interview with our colleagues from RTL Radio.

Goldschmit remarked that while the plan offers a comprehensive assessment of the current mobility landscape, it lacks clear objectives and actionable solutions. She emphasised the need for concrete goals to address the challenges highlighted in the plan.

Once again, we now have a document that says there is a problem, Goldschmit said, criticising the fact that no solutions are mentioned. In her view, however, it is clear that the reliance on motorised traffic in Luxembourg City needs to be reduced.

If the goal is to maintain good quality of life in Luxembourg City, then it can no longer be acceptable to take the car for 3 to 4 kilometres within the capital, according to the president of ProVelo. But in order to achieve this, decent infrastructure is paramount, Goldschmit argued. She stressed that there is potential, but the local authorities need to create a conducive environment for soft mobility options.

In general, Goldschmit underscored the inadequacy of the existing cycling infrastructure in Luxembourg. However, ProVelo has placed its hopes in Minister for Mobility Yuriko Backes to finally make the planned network a reality. After all, the plan envisions a future where Luxembourg boasts 1,200 kilometres of cycle paths, but significant progress is still needed to achieve this target, with over 500 kilometres yet to be developed.
