What makes the perfect holiday for Luxembourg residents? Statec conducted a survey on tourism in 2022 to establish what Luxembourgers expect from their travels.

Relaxing on the beach, enjoying warm weather, with good food and drink to top it off — unsurprisingly, these elements make up the ideal holiday, according to the Statec report.

The survey, which was conducted in four languages (Luxembourg, English, French and German), showed that sunshine was clearly a key objective for holidaymakers, regardless of their background. Weather aside, opinions were divided depending on the language used for the survey responses.

For French-speaking Luxembourgers, relaxation was their second priority for holidays, compared to good food for Luxembourgish respondents.

As for German speakers, good food and being by the seaside were key goals and almost of equal popularity, closely followed by peace and quiet. English speakers prioritised relaxation, with good food dropping to sixth place on their list of demands.

What happens when the weather is bad?

Despite the overall desire for sunshine, weather patterns have indicated increases in the amount of precipitation recently. This means that holidaymakers hoping to spend their precious time off lounging on the beach may have to adapt their plans in case of inclement weather.

But Luxembourgers aren't just seeking seaside trips - the survey also showed that many prioritise spending quality time with their families, as well as broadening their horizons. Trends emerged from the report that go beyond beach holidays, with participants mentioning activities such as shopping, having fun, disconnecting from their daily lives, enjoying winter sports, walking and making the most of their free time. For Luxembourg residents, the destination is just part of the ideal holiday, while the ambience, activities on offer and the perfect travel partner also impact their enjoyment of their travels. Although the survey did not single out one location as a favourite — France, Italy, Spain and Portugal were ranked highly as preferred holiday destinations.

Household income plays an important role in holiday planning

Families with lower income tend to emphasise spending time together as a family when planning a holiday. Those who are better off tend to prioritise nature exploration trips, or more cultural activities, and they usually choose hotel accommodation.

It also depends on whether residents are planning solo trips or holidays with other people. Pensioners prioritise factors such as nature and culture, choosing to stay in mountain hotels, for example. Families prefer to spend their holiday time swimming, doing outdoor activities, reducing stress but with a variety of entertainment on offer. Single residents spend their holidays partying, practising sports, and enjoying cultural or nature-based activities.
