A recent parliamentary question has brought to light that since 2019, a total of 27 minors have been housed in the Schrassig prison, with the highest number of placements occurring two years ago, when eleven minors found themselves in cells within the Schrassig adult prison.
These situations arose partially due to the lack of available space in the Security Unit (UniSec) located in Dreiborn.
Presently, efforts are underway to develop youth protection legislation alongside parallel juvenile criminal law. This legislative initiative also includes plans for the construction of a dedicated prison specifically designed for minors.
However, Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue has refrained from specifying a timeline for the completion of this legislative work.
The socio-educational centre in Dreiborn and Schrassig has operated in a decentralised manner for the past four years. Notably, a residential group in Burglinster has been part of this decentralised management approach, and an additional unit for affected young people is slated for construction by 2026.
These details were disclosed by Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue and Minister of Education Claude Meisch in response to a parliamentary question posed by Pirate Party MP Marc Goergen.
