New councillors were elected in the two East Luxembourgish municipalities on Sunday.
The Beaufort election results of 11 June had been cancelled due to the administrative court's conclusion that one of the candidates of 'Biergerlëscht Beefort, Déiljen, Grondhaf' was not eligible to run.
In the initial election, this list of eight candidates secured four council seats, while 'Är Lett,' led by former mayor Camille Hoffman, won seven.
However, on 8 October, 'Biergerlëscht' managed to secure a majority with six council seats. Bruno Domingues, despite finishing second, opted to cede the mayoral position to Jean-Luc Nosbusch of 'Är Lett' due to his higher vote count.
"From the beginning, we have valued the will of the voters as well as the principle of transparency. Also, our main motto was to work with each other, not against each other. So we got in touch, discussed a few things, and decided that togetherness was the way forward."
Jean-Luc Nosbusch did not comment, as he does not feel the need to communicate any special notes on the elections to the press.
The situation is a little different in neighbouring Berdorf, where the June elections were postponed due to the death of a candidate - as stipulated by the law.
This time around, Mayor Joe Nilles collected the most votes, followed by Ben Streff and Marc Wintersdorf. Nonetheless, Ben Streff will not be joining the council, with fourth-place Daniel Scharff joining instead. Joe Nilles elaborates on this:
"We asked Ben Streff at the beginning whether he would like to work with us, to which he replied that he'd rather form his own team. Of course, it is then hard for me to go against the voters who placed their trust in me."
Ben Streff sees the situation from a slightly different angle. Indeed, he had discussed potential cooperation with Nilles and been on the same wavelength on several topics, but the cooperation fell through because of former ADR president Jean Schoos.
Streff explains: "There are certain principles to uphold in life, and for me, they clearly mean that I'll never cooperate with the Right. Mr Nilles had a similar view at the time and dismissed running for elections on the same list as Mr Schoos, but a few weeks later things turned out differently. To this I told Mr Nilles to choose between me and Mr Schoos, and in the end he chose Schoos."
Jean Schoos did indeed just make it into the municipal council as the ninth elected.
