Two men were pulled over after running a red light on Tuesday afternoon, in what turned out to be a most unlucky police check for the two fraudsters.
Police pulled the men over after they drove through a red light on Avenue de la Gare in Luxembourg City. Officers searched the vehicle due to the distinct smell of cannabis and discovered a large amount of cash hidden in the glove compartment. As the driver was unable to produce any paperwork or a licence, the two men were taken to the nearest police station for further checks.
Over the course of the investigation, officers discovered that both men were involved in a fraud scheme in which they posed as fake bank employees in order to convince people to hand over their bank details and credit cards. The scam consists of informing the victim that unauthorised transactions have been debited from their bank accounts, and advising them their cards need to be changed as a result.
Officers performed a full search of each suspect, confiscating large sums of cash and finding three credit cards concealed upon one suspect's person. On the orders of the public prosecutor's office, both suspects were arrested and appeared in court on Wednesday.
