Social media users have recently raised questions regarding the reimbursement of cross-border healthcare services, particularly the necessity of prior authorisation for medical imaging, such as MRIs.
Minister of Health Paulette Lenert and Minister of Social Security Claude Haagen have issued clarifications, confirming that the simplified procedure applied in the past is being maintained.
This means that the coverage for MRI analyses conducted abroad will persist without the need for formal requests or prior authorisations, as agreement is implicitly granted. It should nevertheless be noted that reimbursement is only granted if the patient is unable to obtain an MRI scan in Luxembourg "within a reasonable timeframe from a medical point of view."
Despite this, policyholders are advised, if possible, to still use the prior application process with the National Health Fund (CNS). This approach allows the CNS to assess the applicability of European regulations governing the coordination of social security systems. If deemed applicable, this process facilitates direct reimbursement, sparing the insured individual from the burden of upfront payment for cross-border care expenses.
