A 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the apartment building fire in Grundhof on Wednesday, which left three people hospitalised, the public prosecutor's office said Friday afternoon.

Judicial police carried out an investigation on site and quickly suspected the fire had been caused deliberately. The suspect was identified and presented to the Diekirch investigating judge on Friday morning.

The suspect was charged with arson and placed in preventive detention at the Sanem penitentiary.

Around 10.30pm on Wednesday, the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) was alerted to a fire in a former hotel turned apartment building in Grundhof.

Sixty firefighters were on site trying to extinguish the flames, taking water from Sûre river in the process.

One person was saved from the third floor with a ladder while three people had to be hospitalised.
