Statec published the figures on the world of work in Luxembourg ahead of Labour Day on 1 May.
A total of 479,000 employees work in Luxembourg. Of these, only 255,000 are resident in the Grand Duchy, and as few as 124,000 are Luxembourgish.
It is well known that hundreds of thousands of employees commute into Luxembourg from its neighbouring countries. The number of cross-border workers numbered 224,000 at the end of 2022 - just 30,000 less than the number of working residents. In other words, nearly half of Luxembourg’s workforce lives beyond its borders.
121,000 employees commute from France, while 52,000 live in Germany and 51,000 in Belgium.
Of the nearly half a million employees, 59 percent are male.
Statec noted that Luxembourg sits barely above the EU average in terms of part-time employees, with just 18% of residents working part-time. The parental leave reforms have contributed to this, among other things, as more people are able to work flexibly while maintaining a full-time contract. Just 7% of male employees work part-time, compared to 30% of female employees. The most common reason given for this is family.
In 2022, 34% of employees worked from home at least one day a week, compared to 20% of all staff in 2019. This represents a 70% increase in remote work compared to life before the coronavirus pandemic.
In terms of employee satisfaction, 87% of participants said they were rather satisfied, or very satisfied with their situation. When it comes to salaries, it is no surprise that employees in more senior positions, such as managers, were more likely to be satisfied with their wages, whereas only half of farmers or drivers indicated satisfaction with their salary.
