Business federation FEDIL recently presented the results of a study on work qualification, which shows that requirements in the construction sector and industry are currently evolving.

The federation expects there to be close to 400 new job openings next year, as well as 370 job replacements.

FEDIL vice president Thierry Wolter explained that increased digitalisation and automation are fuelling this transition. He also drew attention to the fact that significantly more university graduates are being hired in the sector: "20% of wanted people have a master's degree or a PhD. It used to be way fewer people. Today, more skills are needed."

The national employment agency (ADEM) confirms that the rise of new technologies and complicated machinery has led to more specialised candidates being needed. This in return makes it more difficult to find suitable people.

According to ADEM spokesperson Ines Baer, people registered with the agency either have a 'diploma of professional aptitude' (DAP) or no formal training: "This means it is important for us to offer trainings that facilitate access to the industry for people without DAPs."

However, it should be noted that with 60 companies and 15,000 people, this edition of the study had the lowest participation rate since the first one was carried out in 1998.
