According to a judicial source, the youth coach under investigation is still being held in the Sanem prison. The 22-year-old man is accused of murder. He allegedly injured the initial attacker so severely with a stone and a knife that the latter succumbed to his injuries several hours after the incident.
Nevertheless, the investigation is expected to still last “a long time”, the same judicial source told RTL on Monday.
The facts surrounding the fatal incident, which took place at the Hiehl football pitch in Esch-sur-Alzette on 20 January 2022, have now been established: the deceased man verbally abused and attempted to physically assault several players and coaches during a training session for minors before being chased by several people.
During this pursuit, the aggressor threw away his knives, which means he was no longer an imminent threat after having been immobilised.
It was at this point that the young coach took hold of one of the knives and used it to stab the defenceless aggressor several times. The latter was seriously injured as a result and later died of his injuries in a hospital.
The presumption of innocence is still in force until a verdict is announced.
