UpdateMajor power outage occurs in north of Luxembourg on Sunday evening

A major power outage occurred in the north of Luxembourg on Sunday evening, leaving people in Wiltz, Wincrange, Grosbous, Wahl, and Esch-sur-Sûre without electricity.

The issue was first noticed at 5.50pm on Sunday. Only half an hour later, problems were resolved in Esch-sur-Sûre, Grosbous, and Wahl.

In Wincrange and Wiltz, however, it took until 8.41pm before the last street was successfully reconnected to the power grid.

In a statement published later on Monday, energy supplier Creos acknowledged the power supply interruption, which it says occurred at the Roullingen substation and affected several towns connected to Wiltz, Noertrange, Oberwampach, Nocher, Heiderscheid, and Eschdorf.

The statement elaborates that the outage “was caused by a defect on a medium voltage cable. Creos teams isolated the faulty cable and power was restored in stages from 6.18pm onwards on the section Nocher to Eschdorf and in the municipality of Wiltz. By 7.35pm, 80% of the customers affected by the failure had power again. At 8.59pm, all customers had power again.”

Creos further apologised to customers affected by the outage.

Earlier on Monday, MP Martine Hansen from the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) already filed an urgent parliamentary enquiry to learn more about the series of power outages affecting the north of the Grand Duchy during the past week.

Minister for energy Claude Turmes will now have one week to respond to the enquiry.
