The Iranian Student Association A.S.B.L has organised a protest and vigil on Thursday September 29 at Place Clairefontaine in Luxembourg City at 6pm.

In a press release sent to RTL Today, the student association wants to invite people to join Iranian people protesting around the world against the mandatory hijab (headscarf), in a symbolic memorial event for Mahsa Amini, who died 10 days ago at the hands of Iran’s Morality Police.

Years ago there were already protests… After the revolution, it was not mandatory [to wear the hijab] for the first years. Then they changed it and made it law” says Soheil Banejshafie, one of the organisers of Thursday’s protest.

“She was arrested [on Friday] and her dead body was returned to her family on the following day” says the press release of the student association.

Meanwhile, the official death toll in the unrest in Iran is 41, while human rights groups say the true number is more than 75.

On Thursday, “we want to express our condolences through memorial gifts and a candlelight vigil, mostly in silence” says the association.

The young generation doesn’t care at all about his law in Iran” says Soheil, “the government can't control the young people anymore…they have increased the number of the morality police”.

After the protest, the Iranian Student Association will read a statement “condemning this crime and showing support to the Iranian people”

Soheil expects hundreds of people to show up to the protest and vigil to show support for what is happening in Iran. He says the Iranian government wants “to hide what is happening in Iran from the rest of the world” as he tells us “Mahsa’s name will be our Victory Word”.

Luxembourg City has confirmed that this protest may take place on Thursday September 29.

Experts expect protests to escalate in Iran. On Sunday one of Iran’s main teachers’ unions called for a nationwide strike. Such strikes have been sensitive in Iran since the 1979 revolution, when collective labour action acted as a useful tactic that helped bring down the Shah.

Iran’s government blames Western media for fuelling conspiracies and instigating the protests.

The protest in Luxembourg City is expected to take place between 6 and 8 pm on September 29 and the organisers ask for media attention to increase their visibility and support for their cause.
