Solar panel installations rose to record levels in 2021, according to a new report by the Luxembourg Regulatory Institute.
1,264 new facilities were built in 2021, a 48% increase on the previous year. This means the total power of all Luxembourg's photovoltaic plants has reached 277 megawatts since 31 December 2021.
However, despite the promising increase, there has not been a major change in renewable energy in general, rising from 979 GWh in 2020 to 993 GWh in 2021.
This is attributed to the less than favourable wind conditions in 2021, while many wind turbines were removed from service in order to be replaced by newer models.
Consumer habits also changed over the last year, in part due to the coronavirus pandemic and lower-than-average temperatures. In general, Luxembourg consumption rose by 4.6% for electricity and 7.6% for gas.
The report added that the number of households who have changed energy providers has remained stable.
The total power of all photovoltaics has been 277 megawatts since 31 December 2021. However, this does not bring about any major changes in renewable energies in general: from 979 GWh in 2020 to 993 GWh in 2021, there has been only a slight overall increase. This is mainly due to the fact that the wind conditions were less favorable last year and many wind turbines were taken out of service to be replaced by new ones.
In general, 4.6% more electricity and 7.6% more gas were consumed, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and due to lower average temperatures.
The number of people who have changed their energy provider has remained stable, the report said.
