A crowd of people gathered near the Belgian border for the "convoi de la liberté" ("freedom convoy") on Sunday morning.

The convoy is set to go to Brussels, home of several EU institutions, for a protest.

According to information acquired by our colleagues at RTL 5minutes, around 100 people have convened at the Aire de Capellen on the A6 motorway.

Police are present at the scene to monitor the situation.

Authorities in Brussels have meanwhile issued a statement to remind protestors that they are not allowed to block inner-city traffic.

Instead, a specific parking lot at the "Brussels Expo" has been made available as a designated protest area.

Nevertheless, the police advise drivers to avoid the Brussels motorway ring, where authorities are set to conduct routine checks of drivers.

The convoys have been inspired by trucker-led protests in Canada, who have shut down central Ottawa and disrupted cross-border trade in anger at Covid health rules crossing points.
