The new system is supposed to reduce administrative procedures so that more people can be covered by the social security net.
Minister Romain Schneider emphasised that there is still a considerable number of people living in Luxembourg without employment or revenue, which makes it impossible for them to organise or pay for a healthcare programme.
People who have been in Luxembourg for at least three months can now voluntarily apply at the National Heath Fund without having to become a registered resident first, Minister Lenert explained.
Officials estimate that around 1,000 people will be concerned by the change. A budget of €1.5 million has been created for the year 2022. The system is based on recommendations from the World Health Organisation and the Health Roundtable.
