Chamber of DeputiesMPs pass new Covid law

RTL Today
The DP, LSAP, Green, Pirate and CSV parties all voted in favour of the new coronavirus law, while Déi Lénk abstained. The ADR party voted against the amendments.

Luxembourg’s Covid rules will be adapted slightly for the summer as they are neither eased nor tightened.

The latest amendments to the Covid law were approved by MPs on Thursday morning in the Chamber of Deputies, garnering cross-party support from all save for the ADR and déi Lénk.

The CovidCheck rules will be amended to add further restrictions to the hospitality sector, with customers no longer able to rely on a rapid test result after 1am.

This is due to the fact that many new virus cases were traced back to nightlife venues and events, explained rapporteur Mars di Bartolomeo, of the LSAP.

CSV MP Claude Wiseler said his party would have preferred stricter measures a few weeks ago, and raised the question of whether free nights were even appropriate.

Minister of Health Paulette Lenert stressed that it was impossible to expect a summer without Covid cases. It was therefore vital to continue administering vaccines, she said, and added that a campaign would be launched to increase the uptake of appointments.

The Waringo report into care homes during the pandemic still loomed large over the Chamber discussions, although it was not on the agenda for the day’s debates. Minister of Family and Integration Corinne Cahen, at whom much criticism has been levelled by opposition figures over the past few days, was said to have refused to answer questions on the topic and avoided discussions pertaining to the report.

The Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR) proposed a motion on Thursday to resume parliamentary sessions at the original seat of the Chamber on rue du Marché aux Herbes from October onwards. The motion was defeated by a majority vote of 31.
