
The task force’s weekly report did not come as a surprise this time: with infections on the rise, it would seem that a rebound is inevitable.
The group of experts underline that the increase in social interactions play an influential role in the virus spread. For the head of the National Health Directorate, Dr Jean-Claude Schmit, the recent rise in infections is definitely linked to the gatherings that took place on National Day.
“The significant increase in the 7-day average of daily cases to 48 cases/day compared to 15 cases/day for the week before represents a major challenge for the current epidemic situation”, the report reads. Social distancing, hygienic measures and contact tracing will be essential in order to stabilise the situation, it concludes.
The fact that the Delta variant is now the most prominent mutation in Luxembourg (54.3%) does not make matters easier, given it is more transmissible compared to previous variants.
Weekly overview: New Covid-19 infections experience 19% increase
It remains to be seen how the government will react to the rise in infections and the task force’s projections.
Luxembourg has seen a steady increase in positive cases this week and 136 new infections were detected in the Grand Duchy on Thursday. The Prime Minister caught Covid-19 last week as well.
But hospitalisations remain low, which could indicate that vaccinations are having an effect and preventing serious Covid cases where patients must be hospitalised.
