ESA recruitment65 astronaut applications from Luxembourg

Pierre Weimerskirch
Going to space is a childhood dream for many. The European Space Agency last selected astronauts in 2008.

A new recruitment drive was launched this year and the ESA just published its initial numbers. 22,589 individuals from across Europe sent in their applications over the past few weeks. 65 of them are from Luxembourg, 12 women and 53 men.

Newly included was a search for para-astronauts. 257 people with disabilities applied, including one Luxembourger.

The European Space Agency regularly sends astronauts to the ISS. There is also a manned mission to the moon in the works, while sending astronauts Mars is still a ways off. But who knows, perhaps the first Luxembourger will set foot on the moon in a few years. Even if the lengthy selection process will whittle down the 23,000 candidates to only a handful.
