The Luxembourg government is not in favour of introducing a motorway toll for Belgian roads.

On that basis, the government had proposed an exemption for the Greater Region to the Walloon Region over the summer.

Namur, however, is unwilling to change its plans. That much was stated by Walloon Mobility Minister François Desquesnes, in comments including those made to L’Essentiel.

Luxembourg’s Mobility and Public Works Minister, Yuriko Backes, is currently unavailable for interview on health grounds.

In response to an inquiry, she set out in writing that the government had learned through the press that the introduction of the road toll had been confirmed for 1 January 2027.

While a general response had been received from Wallonia, no official feedback had come back on Luxembourg’s proposal.

The Luxembourg government remains concerned about the potential consequences.

According to the minister, once the final texts are available, an analysis will be carried out to determine whether the Belgian plans are in line with EU law.
