This was revealed by Minister of Health Paulette Lenert in a reply to an urgent parliamentary question by MP Marc Spautz from the Christian Social People's Party (CSV).

Lenert explains that a South African study, which was published in mid-March, was not able to prove the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine against the South African coronavirus variant.

In the National Health Directorate's latest weekly coronavirus report, the South African variant was the cause of 8.8% of all cases in Luxembourg.

For the time being, Luxembourg does not allow a person to be vaccinated with two different vaccines, with health authorities referring to a lack of scientific data on the subject.

Upon enquiry by RTL, the National Health Directorate confirmed that the delay between the first and second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine is eight weeks, despite the Superior Council of Infectious Diseases' recommendation of a 12-week delay.

MP Marc Hansen from the Green Party (Déi Gréng) submitted an urgent parliamentary question on this subject on Monday.
