Although the Asian hornet has been present in France since 2004, it has now been spotted in the Grand Duchy for the first time, with sightings in Junglinster, Esch-sur-Alzette and Ingeldorf.

According to the press release published on Monday, the Asian hornet is not generally aggressive, but nests should be professionally removed as the hornets can disturb the bee population.

It is advised not to approach their nests without professional assistance, as the hornets can become defensive and increase the risk of being stung.

The hornets are identifiable by their dark bodies and the yellow legs which give them their name.

The Nature and Forests Administration requested that sightings be reported to the administration or to the National Museum of Natural History, either by filling in the form linked here or by emailing vespa@neobiota.lu.

Emails should contain the address or geographical location of the sighting, as well as photos where possible.
