After the presumed hantavirus outbreak, in which three people are reported to have died, Luxembourg Air Rescue has been operating for two days to airlift two patients. According to RTL information, a flight to the vessel is planned for Tuesday, with the return scheduled for Wednesday.

Strict hygiene and safety measures are in place on board. Infected passengers are being isolated and are receiving medical care, according to sources at the scene.

Background

The MV Hondius was travelling from Ushuaia in Argentina towards Cape Verde, off the coast of West Africa. A total of 149 people are currently believed to remain on board.

Hantavirus can cause severe respiratory illness. However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), there is no cause for concern for the general public following the outbreak on the ship, as the overall risk remains low.
