A new report from the EU's statistics agency shows that Luxembourg spends by far the most in the EU on recreation and sport.

Government expenditure on recreation and sport in Luxembourg amounts to an estimated €500 per inhabitant per year, according to Eurostat.

This places Luxembourg at the top of the EU list, leaving Sweden (€254) and Finland (€226) far behind in second and third.

On the other end of the scale, Bulgaria (€11), Romania (€30) and Slovakia (€31) occupy the bottom three spots in the EU.

The EU average is €113.
