Considering this may very well be the last weekend where the temperatures will lend themselves to permit outdoor swimming, here is a list of spots that have not been affected by blue-green algae.
Luxembourg affords its residents three places to go swimming, public pools notwithstanding. These natural bathing areas are the Upper Sûre lake, Remerschen and Weiswampach lakes.
Unfortunately – or perhaps, fortunately – as the outdoor swimming season is nearing its end (30 September), the presence of blue-green algae is restricting the number of places open to swimmers.
As we approach what could well be the last weekend where swimming will be a possibility, we thought it would be helpful to give you a quick rundown of where you can still catch those last rays on a beach outside.
UPPER SÛRE LAKE
Luckily, with only one area affected, six out of the seven beaches are still open for visitors. If it’s the Haute Sûre that is calling you, just give the beach “Rommwiss” a miss since the presence of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in the water means swimming is prohibited.
To avoid confusion – just in case! – here is a list of the different spots that are still open: Liefrange, Burfelt, Fuussefeld, Insenborn and Lultzhausen. With a water quality rating of “excellent”, the National Waters Administration has given the go ahead for any avid swimmers out there.

WEISWAMPACH LAKE
Sadly, a no-go area: the lake is closed for the same reasons as the "Rommwiss" beach in Esch-sur-Sûre. The Ministry for the Environment went as far as to putting out a statement earlier this week to declare that the situation was in fact getting worse at Weiswampach Lake.

REMERSCHEN POOLS
Reports earlier this Friday announced that the toxic cyanobacteria had made it into the Remerschen pools as well. The government has prohibited swimming and any other kind of water-based activities.

Let us remember that temperatures will probably not exceed 25°C Saturday and 26°C Sunday. While for some this does not constitute outdoor swimming weather, for others it's more than enough. Whatever you do, be careful and avoid a cold!
