Blue algae have yet again been found at the Upper Sure lake, the Ministry of the Environment said in a statement this Tuesday.

Swimming and other water activities have been prohibited at the "Romwiss" beach between Baschleiden and Boulaide, until further notice. The ministry also advises against the consumption of fish caught in the lake. Dog owners should also not let their dogs drink from the lake. Drinking water is not affected.

Blue algae are cyanobacteria that produce toxins that can be dangerous to humans, wildlife, pets and livestock.

It is recommended to seek medical attention if you experience health issues after having been in contact with cyanobacteria.

No swimming ban at other official beaches

The Romwiss is particularly prone to mass development of cyanobacteria because of its geographical location (water levels are relatively shallow and the beach is protected form winds) and a greater presence of nutrients in the water.

Swimming is still permitted at other official beaches. We will keep you updated in case new bans are issued.
