Luxembourg's Blood Transfusion Centre is accustomed to this yearly occurrence and have said there is no cause for alarm.

The need for blood supplies does not diminish during the summer, but donations are rarer in the warmer months.

Despite this, Vincent Ruck, communications spokesperson for the Red Cross Luxembourg, said they were not alarmed at present. He noted that they had seen a fall in responses from their regular donors, ascribing this to the "holiday effect". He also said they appreciated holidaymakers who donated before they went on their travels.

Those returning from holiday would be equally welcome at the donation centre. A list of destinations which are not compatible with blood donations is available online and any necessary information regarding donation is accessible by phoning 27 55 – 4000.

The Red Cross' conditions for donating blood are as follows: over 18 years of age, weighing more than 50 kilograms, not presenting a risk of transmitting infectious diseases and being in general good health.

Final tip: as always, and especially in this hot weather, ensure you are well hydrated before the donation and fasting is not required. Fresh drinks and snacks are, of course, available to you before and after your donation.
