There was a recent false alarm concerning a sighting of oak processionary moth caterpillars found in Leudelange, which turned out to be another species of caterpillar.
However, the caterpillars seen in the above photo taken not far from RTL City have been confirmed as oak processionary moth caterpillars. The Natur an Ëmwelt association confirmed the species of the moths for RTL.
The caterpillars do not only cause damage to the natural environment, but can be noxious to human and animal health. The caterpillars are covered in hair that can cause allergic reactions - including respiratory problems. The Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Sustainable Development has previously published an information sheet with preventative measures in French and German.
