Luxembourg's statistics service Statec published some facts about language habits after surveying some 6,000 residents on how they use languages.
The press release published by Statec detailed that working in Luxembourg is, as we all know, synonymous with multilingualism. Statec highlighted that every three out of four residents work in a multilingual environment.
However, at home there are some differences. Most households speak one language at home. Only three out of ten residents live in a multilingual household.
As for the most popular languages spoken at home, Luxembourgish naturally remains the most-spoken language at home, with 53% of the population speaking it at home. 32% of the population speaks French at home, followed then by Portuguese at 19%.
Languages in the workplace show a different ranking, likely accounting for the number of cross-border workers in Luxembourg. French is the most common language in the workplace, corresponding to 78% of the population using the language at work. English follows with 51% and Luxembourgish ranks in third place with 48%.
