Following the petition which sought to ban smoking on restaurant terraces and a second petition sought to ensure its legality, a new petition is taking things one step further.

Back in September we reported on petition 1069 which sought to ban smoking on restaurant terraces, and the subsequent petition 1080 which was launched in response to the first one and aimed to "preserve the right to smoke on restaurant terraces."

A new batch of petitions has recently been made available on the chamber of deputies website, including one that is likely to cause similar levels of disagreement.

Petition 1321 seeks not only to ban smoking on restaurant terraces, but wants to outlaw "all smoking under any form of cover in public or semi-public places," and further wants to introduce a penalty of up to €250 for anyone caught in lighting up where they shouldn't.

The petition states that smoking under any form of cover means that you will inevitably risk exposing others to potentially toxic fumes, and includes a list of places that the petitioner argues should be included under the ban. These include:

"Under awnings [such as those found on restaurant terraces /ed. note], in bus shelters, under bridges, in tunnels, and under trees in public parks and forests."

The petition will need to reach 4,500 signatures by 29 April to be considered for parliamentary debate.
