
From New Year’s Day to Boxing day, Luxembourg will have no less than 10 public holidays to look forward to in the year 2019. Of these 10 days, employees in Luxembourg have the possibility of extending their breaks on six occasions without having to waste too many vacation days.
There will be three extended weekends in 2019 due to public holidays falling on a Monday or a Friday:
In addition to this, there will be three opportunities to shorten the working week by taking a tactically clever day off:
Unfortunately, Luxembourg’s National Day will fall on a Sunday in 2019. However, that doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to take a day off work. In fact, labour legislation states that employees have the right to a compensatory day-off in a three-month period after the public holiday in question. However, not taking that compensatory day off doesn’t mean that you’ll get a monetary compensation.
In the coalition agreement, Luxembourg’s new government has announced that 9 May, Europe Day, will become a public holiday in Luxembourg. It is not known whether this will start in 2019, but if so, the public holiday would fall on a Thursday.
