The sustainable development ministry has launched a new awareness campaign against speeding alongside the AVR (national association of road victims) and the road safety service.

The message of the campaign is clear: "Even a life that isn't over can still be ruined." The campaign focuses on how car crashes that might not kill you can still change your life forever.

Depicting people in wheelchairs as a result of road accidents, the campaign includes phrases such as "independent yesterday, in need of assistance today," and "going away in a car, returning in a wheelchair."

The campaign will take the form of posters as well as television and cinema adverts.

One of the main campaigners is Carine Nickels, who is now in a wheelchair as a result of a severe car crash six years ago. Nickels was sitting in the back of a car as it hit a tree.

Since the accident, Nickels is paralysed from the chest downwards. She hopes to make others aware of the dangers of speeding and ensure that they do not play with their lives recklessly. She says that a fate like hers could befall anyone.
