Markusberg Tunnel6,500 speed infractions registered in first month of new radar

RTL Today
The Markusberg Tunnel speed camera, installed on 1 December 2021, has already registered 6,433 instances of motorists exceeding the speed limit.

Over the last month, no fewer than eight high speed offences occurred, including one instance in which a driver was travelling through the tunnel at 194 km/h.

The Ministry of Mobility said the figures were alarmingly high, particularly during the festive season. A spokesperson said they hoped the number of infractions would drop in future as speeding through the tunnel could result in a high risk of accidents.

The speed limit in the tunnel is 90 km/h, or 70 km/h for heavy goods vehicles. The speed camera measures the average speed through the entire 1,600 metre section of the tunnel, rather than a distinct point.

Elsewhere in the Duchy, another section radar in Gonderange measured 641 infractions in the first month of use, just 10% of those recorded at the Markusberg Tunnel.

This speed camera counted a total of 10,063 infractions from its installation on 15 June 2020 to 6 January 2022.

Paul Hammelmann, president of Luxembourg’s Road Safety Association, told RTL 5Minutes that many people were unaware of the existence of the Markusberg Tunnel section radar. He also suggested that the increase in infractions could be due to drivers crossing into Luxembourg from other countries and expecting more lax speed regulations.
