How many educators are working in the different sectors in Luxembourg, i.e. in primary schools, structures for children and adolescents, structures for those with specific needs, and structures for the elderly? This was the subject of a parliamentary question by CSV-MP Marc Spautz.
Here are some figures from the joint answer by the Minister of Education, Claude Meisch, and the Minister for Family Affairs, Corinne Cahen.
In accordance with a law from 2009, all preschool classes are supervised by both a teacher and an educator. There are 294 of those classes this year, and therefore the same number of educator positions. However, there are not only educators for the preschool classes of Cycle 1, but also for older pupils. These educators are part of groups that support pupils with specific needs and are managed by the regional administrations. 214 people are currently working in these full-time positions.
There are currently 2,344 full-time positions in nurseries and day care centres. This applies of course only to the conventional sector. There are 222 positions in the conventional sector to take care of youths ages 12 to 29, i.e. youth centres and youth services.
In the sector for structures taking care of people with specific needs, there are 73.5 positions for educators and 51.5 positions for graduated educators.
CSV-MP Marc Spautz also asked how many educators are working in structures and services taking care of the elderly. The answer refers to a law which defines the nature and the amount of positions per X inhabitants. The law stipulates for instance one full-time position per 5 inhabitants in the case of a care home.
Upon enquiry by Marc Spautz, Corinne Cahen and Claude Meisch stated in their joint answer that there are 2 institutions which train educators in Luxembourg: The Lycée technique pour professions educatives et sociales and the École nationale pour adultes. In total, there are currently 785 people enrolled in these institutions.
