As part of the checks, ordered by the public prosecutor’s office, 15 electric scooters were examined. A number were found to have technical modifications or defects which did not comply with the Highway Code. Some had been modified to exceed the maximum permitted speed of 25 km/h. As a result, 14 scooters were confiscated by the authorities.

According to current legislation, electric scooters cannot go faster than 25 km/h. Exceeding this limit, particularly through purposeful modification, is against the law and means the vehicle is no longer compliant, which can lead to criminal consequences.

The public prosecutor’s office said these modifications can increase the risk of accidents. Exceeding the maximum permitted speed can affect the scooter’s stability, brakes and may not guarantee the rider’s safety. The risk increases when the scooters are used in pedestrian areas, such as public parks.

The violations detected on Tuesday can lead to sanctions and consequences for adult and minor riders. Minors could be subjected to specific legal measures in accordance with youth legislation.

Road safety is a priority, continued the public prosecutor’s office. Using an electric scooter requires strict respect for the Highway Code, as is the case for all vehicles in public spaces. Failing to adhere to regulations on speed, equipment or use will put offenders at risk of criminal consequences.
